The Ramseyer
Memorial School - Swiss School Accra - bears its name in memory of
Friedrich August Ramseyer probably the most significant Swiss who ever lived in Ghana.
He came to the Gold Coast in 1864 as a construction engineer for the
Basel Mission and later became famous as prisoner of the King of
Ashanti.
The School has been founded early 1966 by the Swiss
Community of Accra. Its early stages were very modest. However, already
in 1968 a new building and, in spring 1973, two additional classrooms
could be taken into operation. In December 1996, a nearly 2-year‘s
renovation phase could be concluded.
The Swiss Confederation, the Patronage Canton of Zurich
as well as private sponsors both in Switzerland and Ghana are often
supporting the school in cash and in kind to realise important projects.
Presently, some 83 students attend the Swiss School in Accra.
The School Committee does hope that in the future too, it
may count on the benevolence and support of members, friends and
benefactors, since without their support, the school can indeed not
survive. |
